The plains of Assam are rich in water, soil and wildlife, with four national parks and many sanctuaries. Settlers from across Asia made their home here from ancient times, and some built powerful kingdoms — above all the Ahoms, who ruled for six centuries. In 1823 the Scottish trader Robert Bruce found tea growing wild in Assam, and today more than eight hundred tea estates cover the land in green. This tour is an easy introduction to the state. It starts in Dibrugarh with a stay in a colonial planter’s bungalow and a visit to a tea factory. In Sivasagar you see the temples and monuments of the Ahom kings. On the river island of Majuli, the monks of centuries-old monasteries keep alive Vaishnavite music, dance and drama, and the villages of the Mishing people line the riverbanks. The trip ends in Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the one-horned rhino has recovered from fewer than a dozen animals a century ago to more than two thousand today.

Arrive at Dibrugarh airport and drive to Mancotta Tea Estate to check in at a colonial planter’s bungalow surrounded by tea gardens. The rest of the day is free to settle in, with a good cup of Assam tea.

An early walk in the tea gardens, when the new leaves are fresh. After breakfast, a guided tour of the tea factory to see how tea is made, with a chat with the manager if possible. The afternoon is free to relax, walk to nearby villages, or visit the old planters’ club. In the evening, explore the town’s markets and eat at a local restaurant.

Drive to Majuli (4-5 hours), the largest inhabited river island in the world. On the way, visit the Ahom temples and ruins at Sivasagar and cross the Brahmaputra by ferry. Explore the island’s countryside and wetlands, and watch the sunset by the river. Dinner is Mishing food with apong, the local rice beer. You stay with a local family at their homestay.

Watch fishermen head out in the morning mist, visit the old monasteries where monks study Vaishnavite philosophy, music and drama, and see masks being made by hand at a mask-making center. Walk or cycle to Mishing, Deori and Kachari villages. Evening at leisure, with a bonfire in winter.

Majuli - Kaziranga National Park
Drive to Kaziranga National Park (3-4 hours), home to the largest population of one-horned rhinos and a high density of tigers. In the afternoon, a jeep safari in the central range for elephants, monitor lizards, otters and turtles. Evening at leisure.

A morning jeep safari in the western range, where herds of rhino, deer and wild buffalo gather near the water. Midday is free for nearby villages and craft centers. In the afternoon, a safari in the quieter eastern range, good for birds and, with luck, a tiger. Back to the lodge by dusk.

01Mancotta Heritage Bungalow
A boutique heritage bungalow set in the tea gardens on the edge of Dibrugarh, with the old warmth and comfort the early British planters lived in. It stands raised on stilts in fine colonial style, and every nail in it is made of wood, said to have been carved by traditional Chinese craftsmen. Rooms are large and luxurious with modern amenities, and the lawns and sit-outs are made for long conversations over a good cup of tea.

A family-run homestay on Uttar Kamalabari Road, with balconied rooms and a bamboo-and-thatch cottage around a garden. The lane out runs past paddy fields and bamboo groves toward the river.

03The Kaziranga Heritage
Directly opposite Kaziranga's central Kohora gate. Twenty-eight rooms across heritage bungalows and river-view cottages, built in Assam-type architecture with bamboo wickerwork and local artwork. Its kitchen, Kazi Nemu, cooks Assamese dishes such as khar and masor tenga.
